Introduction

Welcome to the 18th Annual Study Abroad Spring Festival. Guest speakers from our Partner Institutions around the world are joining us this year to present the programs offered at the UHM Study Abroad Center and how they can help you with your academic, professional, and personal goals! Speak with representatives of the host institutions and a Study Abroad Center team member to have all of your questions about study abroad answered!

How to Participate

Our Virtual Festival will take place over Zoom. The schedule below has links to four separate Zoom meeting rooms. Each room will host multiple sessions throughout the day about the Study Abroad Center programs, as well as application and funding information sessions. Click on the “Room 1”, “Room 2”, “Room 3”, or “Room 4” links to join the Zoom meeting room and view any session that interests you. Then, you can either stay in the room to see the next session, or leave the room and visit another session in a different Zoom room.

You do not need to have a Zoom account or any special programs installed; you can attend our Virtual Fair with just a web browser.

All live sessions will be recorded. Most morning session recordings will be replayed in the afternoon. During the replayed sessions, attendees may still have questions answered live by a Study Abroad Center team member.

At the end of every session, a moderator will post a link to a Sign-In form. Please fill out the form to let us know about your experience with the Virtual Fair and let us know what programs interest you. We will use the information to improve future virtual events and let you know about any events for your program of interest.

Virtual Festival Schedule

Most sessions are 30 minutes long with a 5-10 minute question and answer period. There is a 10-minute break between sessions, during which you are free to move to a different room.

Note: the Dublin, Ireland presentation extends for the whole morning session in order to cover the extensive curriculum, and there will be a separate schedule of the presentation so you may drop in on the portion that interests you.

Sarita Rai - University of Hawaii at Manoa: Sarita Rai, UHM Study Abroad Center Director and Professor is frequently consulted for her expertise in international education program development, risk management, cross-cultural education, and political action. She earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Her research and publications are in the areas of international education, modern languages, and shared governance. Her most recent research focuses on governance in the University setting and the role of the faculty. She is a Board Director of the University of Hawai`i Professional Assembly and is its Outreach Committee Chair.

Petrice Flowers - University of Hawaii at Manoa: Petrice Flowers, Associate Professor of Political Science, is an international norms scholar and Japan specialist. Her research on the expansion of norms of protection of refugees and trafficked persons in Japan and Korea has been funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Fulbright US Scholars Program. Petrice's work on multiculturalism in East Asia has been funded by the Social Science Research Council and the National Research Council of Korea. She has held visiting positions at the University of Tokyo where she did her post-doctoral research, Ochanomizu University's Institute for Gender Studies, Hosei University's Faculty of Law, and Hitotsubashi University's Institute for the Study of Global Issues. Petrice's most recent scholarship focuses on gender. She is a member of the University of Gothenburg's GenDip Network of scholars and will spend the 2020-21 academic year at Waseda University researching a project on gender and diplomacy funded by Fulbright.

A charming city of Viking, Norman, and English heritage, Dublin is the capital city as well as the primary education center of Ireland. The UHM Summer in Dublin program provides students an opportunity to fulfill UHM General Education Diversification, major, minor, and elective requirements. Suzanne Shorten - University College Dublin: Suzanne Shorten is the Program Director of Summer At UCD and overseas all aspects of inbound Study Tours to Dublin’s premier university. She is one of the first faces that students will meet as they arrive at UCD, and is the primary escalation contact for any emergencies or special needs that students may experience. She leads a dedicated and committed team who are all former students at UCD, and are perfectly placed to introduce our guests to everything the college has to offer – whether academically, culturally or socially. Suzanne travels extensively throughout the U.S. during the year, forging close personal relationships with American colleges and getting to know their real needs in terms of creating an overseas experience for their students that will affect them for a lifetime. She is also a regular blogger and commentator on issues relating to Study Tours.

Enda Carroll - University College Dublin: Enda Carroll is Associate Director of University of College Dublin Global and heads the Americas division of the office. She leads a team based in Dublin and the USA who are dedicated to the support and recruitment of students from the Americas. Her position involves working in collaboration with UCD’s Schools and Colleges in the areas of academic program development and management of relationships with UCD’s key partners in the region. In 2011, she established UCD's first North America Global Center in New York City with satellite offices in Chicago and Los Angeles. She is an active contributor to study abroad strategy, initiatives and committees in Ireland at the national sector level. She has served on the Forum on Education Abroad board for several years and is currently the first Board Chair to be based at a member institution outside the United States.

Elva O'Sullivan - University College Dublin: Dr. O’Sullivan’s education includes a B.Sc.(Hons) in Chemistry from University College Dublin, Ireland and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Clarkson University, New York. In addition to her broad teaching experience, she has extensive applied industrial experience and has worked at W. R. Grace, Wyeth, American Cyanamid Company and BASF Corporation, the world’s leading chemical company. She is the founder and CEO of ScienceWithMe!® LLC and online science education website with over 100,000 members.

Scott Rickard - University College Dublin: Dr. Rickard’s former roles include SVP & CTO for Data Science at Salesforce and Professor, University College Dublin, Electronic Engineering. His academic credentials include a B.Sc. Mathematics, B.Sc. Computer Science, and M.Sc. Electrical Engineering all from M.I.T., in addition to a MA and PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics from Princeton University. He has authored over 100 publications and is co-inventor on over a dozen patents.

Marcus Baumann - University College Dublin: After graduating with a Diploma in Chemistry from Philipps-University Marburg (Germany) in 2007 I started my PhD with Prof. Steven V. Ley FRS at the University of Cambridge (UK). Here my research focused on the development of new continuous flow approaches towards important organic transformations and selected natural products that have since found widespread applications in both academia and industry. Upon completion of my PhD I was awarded a Feodor Lynen Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation (Germany) allowing me to join the group of Prof. Larry E. Overman at the University of California Irvine (U.S.A.). During these 2 years my research focused on the total synthesis of alkaloid and terpene natural products as well as their analogues including their biological evaluation. This has resulted in a new anti-cancer drug candidate currently entering clinical studies through Novonco Therapeutics in the United States. In 2013 I returned to the UK to take a postdoctoral position with Prof. Ian R. Baxendale at the University of Durham, where I combined my interests in continuous flow technology and the synthesis of bioactive target molecules. In 2017 I moved to Ireland to join University College Dublin as an Assistant Professor in Continuous Flow Chemistry to pursue my independent career.

Description: A brand new program from Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici (LdM), where students take classes in two cities: Florence and Tuscania. In Florence, students will explore The Ancient Roots of Florence while also studying The Pursuit of Happiness. The Tuscania portion of the program will focus on Sustainable Food and Wine Business and Marketing. The program is a celebration of all that is Italian, from history, to excellence in the field of eno-gastronomy, approached from a business and marketing perspective. These courses will be complemented by two blocks of Italian Language instruction – an Italian pre-session in Florence, followed by an intensive session in Tuscania.
